Background: This study was carried out to assess the relationship of body fat, total and regional, by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA) and BMI in postmenopausal women.
Methods: One hundred forty seven postmenopausal women were enrolled in Menopausal Clinic, Yong-San Hospital of Chung-Ang University from January 2001 to April 2002. All of the subjects were devided into 5 groups according to obesity classification based on BMI, Three women (2.0%) are low body weight (BMI<185), 62 women (42.2%) are normal (185 SBMIQ3), 36 women (245%) are overweight (23 _Results: The fat percentage of whole body was 34.0 ¡¾5.2%. The regional fat percentage of arm was highest by 45.3 ¡¾ 6.4% and that of leg was lowest by 29.3 ¡¾4.5% in segmental regions. The fat percentage of whole body and the regional fat percentage of trunk was significantly correlated with BMI (r--0.74, r=0.71, respectively, p<0.001).
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that regional fat percentage of trunk and whole body measured by DEXA are strongly correlated with BMI in postmenopausal women.
